Negotiating new hydroelectric contracts

As part of the province's commitment to increase Ontario's supply of clean, renewable generation, the OPA is developing a program to negotiate new contracts for qualified existing hydroelectric generation facilities in Ontario.

On May 7, 2009, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure issued a directive, asking the OPA, to enter into new contracts for hydroelectric facilities that are connected to the IESO-controlled grid but not currently owned by OPG.

The hydroelectric facilities must not have been previously considered under any renewables RFP. Facilities with or without a current contract with a provincial government body or agency, for any part of the generation output, may participate.

A new contract for a currently contracted facility will not start until after the existing contract expires.

Please note that the development of the Northern Hydro Initiative has been superseded by the development of the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) Program. For more information please visit the FIT website.
