FIT Support Programs
Ontario is launching three new support programs to help communities and First Nations and Métis groups develop and own renewable energy facilities.
These funds will help create a greener Ontario by boosting local involvement in renewable energy projects—whether they are wind, solar, biomass or hydroelectric ventures, among others. The Aboriginal Energy Partnership Program seeks to maximize First Nations and Métis participation while helping to build the province’s energy supply. The program provides funding for some of the initial up-front costs associated with developing a new renewable energy project, including: resource assessments, engineering studies, environmental and regulatory approval studies and business plan presentation, community energy plans and the creation of an Aboriginal Renewable Energy Network. Visit the Aboriginal Renewable Energy Network for more detailed information about the program including the Aboriginal Renewable Energy Fund application form and guidelines. Through the Community Energy Partnerships Program, the province will provide one-time funding support to community groups to assist them with the developmental costs associated with renewable energy projects. The program will be managed through the Ontario Power Authority, which will retain a third-party agent to operate it. The agent will oversee applications, determine selection criteria and, finally, provide funding to qualified applicants. Ontario is also making it easier for municipalities to bring green energy projects to their communities. Through the Municipal Renewable Energy Program, the province will provide support to municipalities for extra costs associated with new renewable energy projects. While many of these costs are charged to the developers, it is expected some additional costs may arise.
